Overseeing the management of money in a Foundation is particularly sensitive. A scandal of any scale would be disastrous. On the other hand, if you implement extra care and attention, ensuring that you are meeting a global fiduciary standard - you might attract more citizens to your cause. Anyone who donates wants to know that their money will be treated responsibly and carefully so that it can have the most positive impact.
For prudent leaders of foundations, we highly recommend that you take two very important actions. First, use an RIA (registered investment advisor) that has a CEFEX certification for the management of the portfolio. Second, use the “S.A.F.E.” document available through CEFEX to perform self-assessments on your organization to discover any weak points in your fiduciary oversight of the money. We will assist you on both fronts.
We are grateful for the Center for Fiduciary Excellence (CEFEX) which has documented a global fiduciary standard of care. It was put together by an impressive group of credentialed investment experts, CPAs and attorneys. The group was founded by Donald Trone, a world-renowned fiduciary investing expert that has testified before U.S. Congress and is considered a very influential person in this specific area.
